To Beard, Or Not To Beard?
Ever wondered about Longfellow’s iconic beard? Scan to uncover the tragic story behind Portland-born poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s facial hair!
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the celebrated poet from Portland, Maine, is honored with a statue right here in Longfellow Square. Notice his big, bushy beard? Here’s a heartfelt story some say may be behind it: In 1861, a tragic fire broke out at Longfellow’s home. He bravely tried to rescue his second wife, Frances, but she was severely injured and sadly passed away. Longfellow himself was badly burned in the effort and may have grown his distinctive beard to cover the scars. Longfellow never remarried and raised his children as a widower. He lived just up the street from this very spot before he passed away in 1882.
