Safety with a smile

In partnership with the Portland Police Department, Portland Downtown proudly oversees the award-winning Downtown Cadet Program. Designed for college students aspiring towards careers in law enforcement or the military, this program offers invaluable hands-on experience in community policing.

Program Overview:

Cadets are sworn in as constables with the City of Portland, patrolling the downtown district from June through October. Their presence enhances public safety through:

Conduct neighborly visits to downtown businesses
Identify and assist individuals in need
Enforce local municipal ordinances
Engage with residents and tourists
Provide a welcoming presence for public safety in Portland

Meet our team

Our team of dedicated cadets and police recruits is on duty Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 am to 6 pm. They are approachable and always eager to engage with the community. If you see them patrolling downtown, don’t hesitate to strike up a conversation about safety or ask any questions you may have.

Community Engagement:

For years, the Downtown Cadet Program has been a vital addition to Portland’s downtown community, recognized for its excellence at the 2016 International Downtown Association awards.
