OPEN TOURS ON IRISH NAVAL SHIP L.É. JAMES JOYCE
The Maine Irish Heritage Center is honored to welcome the L.É. James Joyce to Portland. Meet the crew and take a tour aboard the Irish Naval Ship L.É. James Joyce! The ship will be open to the public on Friday, September 16th from 2pm-5pm, Saturday, September 17th from 10am to 2:30pm, and Sunday, September 18th from 10am-5pm.
The ship will dock at Fore Points Marina on Portland’s East End, near the historic Irish neighborhoods of Munjoy Hill and India Street, and on the waterfront where many Irish found jobs. “We are deeply gratified to host L.É. James Joyce here where so many Irish immigrants and their families called, and continue to call, home.” said Maine Irish Heritage Center Board Chair Robert Kearney.
L.É. James Joyce will be welcomed into Portland Harbor on the morning of Friday, September 16th. The view of Portland from the harbor will be like the one many Irish immigrants saw as they arrived here, with the bell tower of the former St. Dominic’s, now home to the Maine Irish Heritage Center, visible from the harbor and the dock. The Portland Longshoremen’s Benevolent Society will provide line handlers to tie up the ship and to let it go when it departs. “We are delighted to visit Maine, a state with strong connections to Ireland.” said L.É. James Joyce Captain Donnchadh Cahalane.
