Colonial Christmas at the Tate House
The Tate House Museum is hosting a Colonial Christmas Open House on Saturday, December 16 from 12:00 noon to 4:00 PM with Christmas-themed interpretations of Tate House from 12:00 to 3:00 PM. NEW this year, music played on a beautiful historic reproduction harpsichord by Dr. Christina Scott Edelen, an expert in harpsichord history and music. Christina will describe how such an instrument was used during colonial times, particularly among Anglican families such as the Tates, and perform music of the period from 1:00- 3:00 PM.
Our Open House will include a visit to all the unique rooms in the Tate House where docents clothed in 18th century attire will tell visitors about colonial customs and traditions around the holidays in a merchant class British colonial household. The special foods made for Christmas, New Years, and
Twelfth Night celebrations will be described and some of these goodies will be shared with visitors during a reception from 3:00 – 4:00 PM in our Visitors Center, the Means House at 1267 Westbrook Street, Portland.
