SUMMARY:The Art of John Bradley Hudson Jr With Earle Shettleworth
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday November 8th at 7:00 PM the Tate House Museum h
as the honor of presenting “The Art of John Bradley Hudson\, Jr.” in
an illustrated lecture by Earle G. Shettleworth Jr. on Zoom. A native o
f Portland\, Mr. Shettleworth attended Deering High School\, Colby Colle
ge\, and Boston University and was the recipient of honorary degrees fro
m Bowdoin College and the Maine College of Art. He became architectural
historian for the Maine Historic Preservation Commission in 1973 and dir
ector in 1976. He retired from that position in 2015. Mr. Shettleworth h
as lectured and written extensively on Maine history and architecture an
d has served as State Historian since 2004.\n\nJohn Bradley Hudson\, Jr.
was one of Portland’s leading 19th century artists. Born in the city
in 1832\, he established a studio there in 1858. For the next four decad
es\, Hudson produced oil paintings and watercolors of local scenes\, the
Maine Coast\, and the White Mountains. He supplemented his income as a
sign and decorative painter. Much of what is known about his work is fou
nd in his illustrated journal as well as in period newspaper articles. T
his lecture will trace Hudson’s career through his pictures with a spe
cial focus on his watercolors of such Stroudwater landmarks as the Means
House\, Tate House\, and Broad Tavern. The Tate House Museum’s visito
rs center proudly displays an 1879 watercolor by Hudson that is a striki
ng rendition of the Means House with a glimpse of the Tate House in the
background.\n\nThis lecture is free to all and can be accessed by going
to www.tatehouse.org where you will be directed to sign up.\n\nFMI: Holl
