SUMMARY:Alash Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:7pm doors – 8pm show | $20 adv. – $25 day of\n\nPlease n
ote that this show has been rescheduled from April 4\, 2020. All tickets
will be honored for the rescheduled date.&nbsp\;\n\nALASH are masters o
f Tuvan throat singing (xöömei)\, a remarkable technique for singing m
ultiple pitches at the same time. What distinguishes this gifted trio fr
om earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of
modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex ha
rmonies\, western instruments\, and contemporary song forms in Alash’s
music\, but its overall sound and spirit is decidedly Tuvan.\n\nTrained
in traditional Tuvan music since childhood\, the Alash musicians studie
d at Kyzyl Arts College just as Tuva was beginning to open up to the Wes
 t. They formed a traditional ensemble and won multiple awards for tradit
ional throat singing in international xöömei competitions\, both as an
ensemble and as individuals. At the same time\, they paid close attenti
on to new trends coming out of the West. They have borrowed new ideas th
at mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional Tuvan music\, but th
ey have never sacrificed the integrity of their own heritage in an effor
t to make their music more hip.\n\nAlash first toured the U.S. under the
sponsorship of the Open World Leadership program of the Library of Cong
ress and the National Endowment for the Arts. Since then they have retur
ned many times\, to the delight of American audiences. The Washington Po
st described their music as “utterly stunning\,” quipping that after
the performance “audience members picked their jaws up off the floor.
”\n\nAlash enjoys collaborating with musicians of all stripes. They ap
pear as guest artists on Béla Fleck &amp\; the Flecktones’ holiday CD
Jingle All the Way (2008)\, which won a Grammy. The Denver Post remarke
d\, “As electrifying as the Flecktones’ performance was\, the band w
ere nearly upstaged by Alash Ensemble.” Alash also enjoys a longstandi
ng musical partnership with the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra\, and they hav
e collaborated with musicians across the spectrum\, from country to clas
sical to beatboxing.\n\nBeyond performing\, Alash has a passion for teac
hing and promoting understanding between cultures. Their tours often inc
lude workshops where they introduce Tuvan music to students from primary
\, middle and high schools\, colleges\, universities\, and music conserv
atories. Children as young as 8 and 9 have learned to throat-sing. As on
e student exclaimed\, “Alash opened my eyes to a whole new world!”\n
\nAlash has released four CDs of its own: Alash Live at the Enchanted Ga
