Islands

Casco Bay's islands are numerous and vary greatly in size and personality. Many of the small inhabited islands have no roads, stores or accommodations for tourists; these are best avoided and will not be described further. Other than Peaks Island, there are no public toilet facilities. Tie-up time at public landings is limited.

Knighville Landing- "More than just a boat landing." A new landing located west of South Port Marine. Dock your boat and walk to restaurants, shopping, grocery stores, banking and much more. Recreational boaters, water taxis and fishing boats may also pick up and discharge passengers. Seasonal floats mid-April to late October.

House Island is privately owned and is used for group clambakes upon reservation. The stonework on the end of the island is Fort Scammell.

Peaks Island has the greatest population of the inner islands. On the SW end of the island is the ferry landing; adjoining it, a public landing. Going from the landing to Island Ave, one finds gift shops, restaurants, grocery store, bicycle rental and repair shop, Post Office Station and a Public Safety building with restrooms. Island Ave becomes Seashore Ave and circles the island. Next to the public landing is Jones' Landing where one may tie up and visit the restaurant. Still to the west is Peak's Island Marina for fuel and laundromat.

Great Diamond Island, site of Fort McKinley, has a restaurant and store in Diamond Cove, with a place to tie up. The fort area is known as McKinley Estates, a private condo community. On the western half of the island there are privately-owned cottages but no public facilities.

Long Island is a town. There are 2 B & B's, a public landing on the west side, with a grocery store and restaurant just above the landing, mooring is provided for customers. Singing Sands with good anchorage area is on the SE shore.

Little Chebeague Island is part of the Town of Long Island and uninhabited. It has a nice beach on the east side with good anchorage but no landing facilities. Beyond the beach ticks and poison ivy have been reported.

Great Chebeague Island is the largest unattached island in the bay and is part of the Town of Cumberland. On the NW end of the island there is an inn and golf club (846-9478). Play for nonmembers is limited; call first. Chebeague Island Boatyard is on the ocean side where moorings, fuel and some marine supplies are available. A grocery store and restaurant are within two miles.

Cliff Island , part of Portland, is the last island on the ferry line. There are no public beaches, parks, restrooms or B & B's on the island. There is a store at the ferry landing open daily for groceries, sandwiches and ice cream. Tie-up at the public landing (ferry wharf) is limited as to time and space.
